A tracheotomy, also known as a tracheostomy, is a surgically created opening through the neck into the trachea (windpipe) to allow direct access to the breathing tube. It is typically performed in an operating room under general anesthesia. A tube is usually placed through this opening to provide an airway and to remove secretions from the lungs. Rather than breathing through the nose and mouth, the tracheostomy tube is used. The term tracheostomy refers to the incision into the trachea (windpipe) that forms a temporary or permanent opening, which is called a tracheostomy, however; the terms are sometimes used interchangeably. A tracheostomy is usually performed for one of three reasons: to bypass an obstructed upper airway, to clean and remove secretions from the airway, or to deliver oxygen to the lungs more easily and safely. All tracheostomies are done because there isn't enough air getting to the lungs. There are numerous reasons why adequate air cannot reach the lungs.
