The majority of patients have family that are offering some kind of support and care. This "informal care" can be of significant breadth, intensity, and duration for older folks and those with chronic disabilities of all ages. Two safety concerns that arise from family caring should worry nurses in all settings. First off, those who provide care are frequently referred to as "secondary patients," and as such, they require and merit protection and direction. Given the demands of caregiving, which put family carers at a high risk of harm and adverse outcomes, research in support of this caregiver-as-client approach focuses on measures to safeguard family carers' health and safety. Second, unpaid family carers frequently require assistance in order to develop into capable, secure volunteers who can better look out for their own family members.
